Express delivery leads to more sales

MediaMarktSaturn is Germany’s largest retailer for consumer electronics and related services. To make home and office deliveries, the retailer had been relying on traditional logistics partners, which meant the items were taking an average of 1-3 days to arrive. MediaMarktSaturn realized consumer expectations on delivery were changing, and the need for express delivery options was becoming paramount. In a 2023 survey by Edelman research, where more than 5,700 European consumers shared their opinions about online shopping and express delivery, 72% reported they expect express delivery as an option when shopping online. And 63% said all else being equal, they would choose a company that offers express delivery over one that doesn’t.

To better serve online shoppers who want their items now, MediaMarktSaturn set out to offer express delivery within 90 minutes --a fast and reliable delivery experience that would be better than any other retailer in the German market. They were able to achieve this using their stores as logistics hubs and by launching their partnership with Uber Direct. The response from consumers has been enthusiastic. “We completed more than 10,000 express deliveries during the Black Friday week with Uber Direct” says Blenk, “Customers ordered on our website, from a wide assortment of products, including games consoles, vacuum cleaners, and headphones, with the fastest delivery arriving in less than 10 minutes”. The ability to reach customers faster and enhance their shopping experience opens up new revenue streams.

Uber Direct’s API and technical support team made it easy for MediaMarktSaturn to start offering express delivery quickly using their existing store operations. “Uber's prebuilt solutions matched our operational approach, helping us get up and running without unnecessary delays,” Blenk says. “Uber offered the flexibility and efficiency we needed, which made the partnership a perfect fit,” he adds. Currently, 95% of online orders requesting express delivery are fulfilled within a 90-minute window, which is a major achievement for both teams. “It’s a big deal to be able to offer this speed of delivery very consistently with Uber Direct, even during Black Friday and the busy Christmas season, and we are proud to be the only consumer electronics retailer in Germany offering this,” he adds. In addition to improving customer convenience and increasing operational efficiency in the store, MediaMarktSaturn was interested in the delivery tracking and proof of delivery features offered by Uber Direct. Preventing fraud is critical for anyone selling high-value consumer electronics, as losses can add up quickly. Traditional delivery processes involve multiple steps, and the longer time frame means there is often more time to catch issues before they escalate. The MediaMarktSaturn team was concerned that express delivery could make fraud prevention more challenging because there would be less time to intervene. What’s next for MediaMarktSaturn and Uber

MediaMarktSaturn is working on making their delivery service even more convenient for store employees by streamlining courier pickup points. And they are expanding the hours customers can place an express order by enabling order pickups at night after the in-store shopping hours end. Additionally, the team is expanding express delivery to more stores, including additional regions within Germany, and to their stores in Poland. “Once all of our German stores can offer express delivery, it will be a huge boost,” Blenk says. In 2025, MediaMarktSaturn plans to offer smaller electronics and accessories for same-day delivery through the Uber Eats app. “Being on the Uber Eats app may be a great way to advertise our brand, reach new customers, and let people know we offer same-day delivery,” Blenk says.
