How Joseph's Dream Burger created a dream tech stack with Uber and Deliverect

November 5, 2024 | United States

In the bustling New York dining scene, you need to be different to stand out. In the case of Joseph's Dream Burger the kosher restaurant has built a strong following with customers who are hungry for their creative burgers made with quality ingredients, and served up with friendly service. We spoke with Zack Yarmak, at Joseph’s Dream Burger to understand how they are working closely with Uber Eats, Uber Direct and Deliverect to create a restaurant tech stack that works as hard to delight customers as the restaurant does.

A delicious experience that keeps customers coming back for more

“We focus on three things at Joseph’s Dream Burger -- the quality of the food, the service, and the price,” says Yarmak. “When you bite into one of our burgers, it’s like a high-end dining experience without the cost”. Customers seem to agree, helping the business grow over the past ten years from one location on Coney Island Avenue to four locations across Brooklyn, a city known for its buzzy restaurant scene. As their customers’ appetites for online ordering have grown, they’ve faced a new challenge: ensuring their burgers—and their service—stay warm, even for deliveries.

Delighting time-strapped diners who prefer to order online

Many of Joseph’s Dream Burger customers are busy parents juggling work and family, who sometimes feel it’s just easier to order online and enjoy that tasty, kosher burger at home. As their customers have become used to ordering online, their standards for a good experience have evolved, “Now they want the food to be delivered from kitchen to door in as little as 30 minutes.” says Yarmak. With takeout orders now accounting for more than 40% of their business, having a great system in place for managing online orders, including delivering them cost effectively has become mission critical.

“We’re crazy about our customers, and Uber helps us serve them better. Uber Eats helps us bring in new customers, while Uber Direct gives us a cost-effective way to help deliver the orders we get on our website or by phone.”

Building the right tech stack with Uber and Deliverect

For busy restaurant operators like Yarmack, managing a restaurant's tech stack can feel like juggling a dozen spinning plates. Especially with an old legacy system full of patches a single slip can bring everything crashing down —orders can get mixed up, the kitchen can get backed up, and delivery times may lag. “When we looked to update our technology to support our expansion to four locations, and to support the growing demand for delivery, we wanted to accomplish a few things”, says Yarmak, “we wanted to update to modern technology, to control our costs as much as possible, and we wanted to standardize and simplify operations, including eliminating the process of manually adding each online order into the POS system.”

Easy implementation

An additional requirement was the ease of implementation. With a busy restaurant to run, Yarmak and his team didn’t have the time or resources to mess around with complicated integrations. Ultimately, they chose to build their system around the Square POS and chose Deliverect as their online order aggregator. “We revolutionized the entire system and chose Deliverect as our aggregator, to act like a dispatcher that takes all of our online orders and moves them to the POS.” Whether the orders come in from a third-party app like Uber Eats or from the restaurant’s own website or phone, the new integrated system is helping Yarmak and his team reduce human errors and increase customer satisfaction.

Meeting customers where they are with Uber Eats and Uber Direct

While Yarmak prefers to have customers dining in the restaurant, he recognizes how important it is to meet his customers wherever they are. “People who prefer to use Uber Eats appreciate the convenience of that app and all the restaurants they can find there. So we need them to see Joseph’s Dream Burger when they’re choosing what to order tonight,” says Yarmak. Visibility on the Uber Eats app is always a challenge, especially in a market like New York. “We’ve only just begun to test out Uber Eats ads and offers to see how it can work for us,” says Yarmak. By implementing targeted ads and buy-one-get-one-free (BOGO) offers, the restaurant hopes to attract new customers who may not have visited the restaurant before. “It takes a few months to really see how these campaigns are running. The good news is it's pretty easy to test,” says Yarmak.

Adding Uber Direct is as easy as 1-2-3

As Joseph's Dream Burger saw their website and phone orders grow, they knew they needed to manage these deliveries to reflect their focus on service, quality, and lower costs. That’s why they were delighted to see how easy it was to add Uber Direct as a delivery option right from their Deliverect dashboard. “It's always a big challenge to deliver food while it’s still hot,” which is why it’s so critical that Joseph’s Dream Burger be able to rely on Uber’s large network of couriers to pick up orders at the restaurant and make the delivery as requested. “In New York, it can take ten minutes to drive half a mile. We need drivers who show up and can get the food there right away,” says Yarmak.

With Uber Eats, Uber Direct, and Deliverect, Joseph’s Dream Burger and their customers are truly living the kosher burger dream. Now, the restaurant can deliver consistently exceptional service in a flash, so every customer experience is as satisfying as those tasty burgers.
